The renowned waterways of the Wolf and Pickerel Rivers, the historic "Champlain Trail" along the Mattawa and French Rivers, and the rugged Temagami wilderness have, by their beauty and tranquility, enticed paddlers for decades.
For white water enthusiasts, opportunities abound. Local outfitters and the Ministry of Natural Resources offer detailed information on specific rivers, their difficulty, water flow, portages, and special conditions. Novice canoeists should not attempt fast water without trained supervision or instruction. Tour groups are recommended for more difficult rivers.
Late May to early June is the best time for white water canoeing because of high water levels. Portages bypass dangerous stretches of fast water or waterfalls.
A number of outfitters and accomodation facilities cater to canoeists, offering guided instructional canoe tours. For the novice, this is the best way to see the spectacular scenery of the Near North.
The canoe season runs from May to October offering something special each month from blueberries to splendid fall colours. Tranquility, clean waters, and campfires - these are all part of the experience.
