Commanda is 27 km west of Hwy. 11 at the intersection of Hwy. 522 and the Old Nipissing-Rosseau Colonization Road. Commanda has a strong community atmosphere, which supports many activities throughout the year. It has a diverse collection of artisans and is the home of the Commanda General Store Museum and Tea Room. Inside the building's decorative exterior, built in 1885, there are hundreds of vintage items, which are exhibited, in historical precision. It is like stepping into the past and should not be missed. |

Bear Valley was originally named for an early settler who chose to clear his land while shirtless. As was the custom, clearing involved the burning of unwanted trees and brush. The combination of solar heat, fire and ash, with the sweat of his labour caused the settler's rather burly body to become coated black. Passing residents thought he looked like a bear, and thus the valley came to be known as Bear Valley.
Near Bear Valley is Pine Lake ; small, serene, with large and smallmouth bass, perch and panfish. Pine Lake reputedly holds an alligator or some kind of large reptile, about four feet long and very shy. The beast was first reported by two American tourists some years ago. However, no one else has seen it.

Golden Valley , a few kilometres west, is the wintering area of one of the largest white tailed deer herds in the province. A viewing station has been established for those who wish to catch a glimpse of the herd.
In expecially hard winters, when the snow is deep and food reserves are scarce, the Loring Yard herd may face the threat of death by starvation.
Recognizing their need, Loring Restoule Business Association has rallied the support of community residents and area hunt club members to provide money and manpower in assisting the Ministry of Natural Resources in rescue efforts. We can cut access trails and bring in feed resulting in a marked increase in deer survival throughout the winter months.
The Pickerel and Wolf River system features canoe routes accessible from the Golden Valley area. |
