The City of North Bay is the hub of Ontario's Near North.

The City of North Bay is known as The Gateway to the North. Both Trans-Canada highways meet in North Bay. Hwy. 11 (Yonge Street, the world's longest main street), takes travellers north and south, while Hwy. 17, the Voyageur Route, takes travellers east and west.

There are two shopping malls and an attractive downtown core with a cobbled road, and an extensive variety of dining facilities to suit every taste.

The Regional Information Centre is situated at the intersection of Hwy. 11 and Seymour St.

Also at this site is the original homestead in which the famous Dionne Quintuplets were born. The Information Centre's gift shop and interpretive centre carry Quint souvenirs as well as books about the famous five.

The birth of the Quints, on May 28, 1934, in the Village of Corbeil, became an historical event remembered throughout the world. The Quints attracted 3 million visitors to North Bay and area during the peak year of the Depression. Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Emilie and Marie, daughters of Oliva and Elzire Dionne, were the first identical quintuplets ever known to survive.

At the time, it was a one in 57 million chance of giving birth to identical quintuplets. Inside the Dionne Quints Museum is some of the origianl furniture, including the bed in which the babies were born and the old wood stove used by the Dionne family. Scores of photographs and advertisements featuring the Dionne Quints are on the walls. Baby clothes, dresses and other artifacts are on display.

The museum is open daily July and August, weekends May - June, September - mid October.

North Bay offers excellent sporting facilities and a wide range of activities in which to participate. The three arenas within the city are the Pete Palangio Arena, the West Ferris Community Centre and the Memorial Gardens Sports Arena. City features include a selection of fitness centres, cross country ski facilities, curling and Laurentian Ski Hill, the area's multi use recreation and education facility.

Fishing abounds for pickerel (walleye), pike, perch, muskie, small and largemouth bass on Lake Nipissing and lake trout in Trout Lake.

A large number of parks and playgrounds can be found throughout the city as well as tennis courts at the North Bay Granite Tennis Club, mini golf and Stock Car races every Sunday from May to December at the North Bay Speedway, on Hwy. 17 East.

North Bay enjoys the shorelines of Lake Nipissing (the fourth largest lake in Ontario) and Trout Lake within city limits. These waters abound with recreational activities. The Nipissing waterfront has hiking and biking trails that lead to other areas in the city. It also has a band shell, beach, the Chief Commanda II, a children's playground, Government Dock and boardwalk.

Moored at the Government Dock on North Bay's beautiful waterfront is the famous and popular cruise vessel, the Chief Commanda II. The ship is a 300 - passenger, all-aluminum catamaran with 3 decks.

Lee Park , located off Memorial Drive on the city's waterfront, features the famous “Gateway to the North” arch, erected in 1928, to divide Southern Ontario from Northern Ontario. A CF-100 fighter plane, the last Canadian aircraft designed and built by the Canadian Air Force, is mounted in Lee Park. Nearby is a Bomarc missile (replaced the Avro Arrow). These both played a major part in the city's military history. Near the children's playground is a steam locomotive, one of the last to be used by the Ontario Northland Railway.
